By road or as the crow flies?

So how far is it between Stockholm and Åre? The answer depends on how you measure. The straight-line distance is about 480 kilometres, but the driving distance is much longer. The most common route by car is via the E4 and E14, which totals about 650 kilometres. The reason the driving distance is longer is that the roads follow the terrain and must go around lakes, hills and other obstacles. The roads also tend to curve and wind through the landscape.

Choose the right route to Åre

There are several routes to choose from when driving from Stockholm to Åre. The best option for you depends on what you prioritise during the trip.
Option 1:
If you want the fastest route with the most motorway driving, take the E4 north to Sundsvall and then the E14 west towards Åre. This route is about 640 kilometres and takes roughly seven hours and thirty minutes if traffic is light.
Option 2:
If you prefer a more scenic drive through the countryside, you can choose a slightly shorter but more rural route. Take the E4 north and turn off at Tönnebro towards Road 83. This route is about 610 kilometres and takes around seven hours and twenty minutes in light traffic. Along the way, you pass towns such as Bollnäs, Kilafors and areas around Lake Storsjön, with beautiful views of forests and lakes.
Remember that the travel times are approximate and do not include stops for food, fuel or breaks. Add extra time to make your schedule more realistic.

Calculate the fuel cost for your trip to Åre

Before you set off, it is useful to estimate the total fuel cost. This depends on the car’s fuel consumption, the current petrol price and the distance you are driving. Below is an example calculation based on a Volvo XC60 (petrol).
We use an average fuel consumption of 0.8 litres per 10 kilometres and a petrol price of 20 SEK per litre. Note that this is only an estimate; actual consumption may vary depending on driving style, weather conditions and other factors.
Route via E4 and E14 (640 km):
  •  Total fuel consumption: 64 × 0.8 litres = 51.2 litres
  •  Estimated cost: 51.2 × 20 SEK = 1,024 SEK
Route via E4, Road 83 and 84 (610 km):
  •  Total fuel consumption: 61 × 0.8 litres = 48.8 litres
  •  Estimated cost: 48.8 × 20 SEK = 976 SEK

What does it cost to drive an electric car to Åre?

If you have an electric car, it is helpful to know the cost of charging along the way. The total depends on your car’s energy consumption, the price at charging stations and how often you need to stop. Below is an example for a Tesla Model Y.
We use an average energy consumption of 0.2 kWh per kilometre and a fast-charging price of 5 SEK per kWh.
Route via E4 and E14 (640 km):
  •  Total energy use: 640 × 0.2 kWh = 128 kWh
  •  Charging cost: 128 × 5 SEK = 640 SEK
Route via E4, Road 83 and 84 (610 km):
  •  Total energy use: 610 × 0.2 kWh = 122 kWh
  •  Charging cost: 122 × 5 SEK = 610 SEK
Starting your trip with a full battery at home reduces costs significantly since fast charging is more expensive. For this distance, you can save around 200 to 300 SEK by charging at home before departure. Actual costs can vary depending on temperature, charger type and other factors.

Charging stations along the way to Åre

A few years ago, long-distance driving in northern Sweden with an electric car was more challenging. Today, things are very different. There are plenty of charging stations along the routes to Åre, often several at the same location, much like petrol stations. The fast chargers we looked at along the two routes offer between 150 and 400 kW.
Route via Sundsvall (E4 and E14):
This route has many charging stations, allowing you to plan breaks based on where you want to stop rather than worrying about range.
Route via Bollnäs (E4, Road 83 and 84):
Although this route has fewer stations, there are still many charging opportunities. After turning off from the E4, there are eight stations available. Three require a short detour to Ljusdal, adding nine extra kilometres to your total distance. For Tesla drivers, it is good to know that two of these stations are Tesla Superchargers.
