How long can you ski in Åre?
Åre offers a long ski season compared to many other Swedish resorts. You can usually ski from mid December until early May. The length depends on which area you choose and on the winter weather. For the 2025/26 season, Åre Village (Åre by) is planned to stay open until 3 May, while the high alpine zone offers skiing until the same date after a later opening in early February.
Those who want to make the most of the season often choose weeks in late April or early May in the higher areas. Spring weeks offer sunshine, longer days and more relaxing breaks in the slopes.

Season length and dates

The planned dates for 2025/26 show how long each part of the resort is open. Åre Village opens on 12 December and closes on 3 May, making it the safest choice for late season skiing. The Gondola and the Cable Car open on 18 December and run until 3 May, providing access to higher terrain throughout the winter.
The high alpine zone opens on 2 February and remains open until 3 May, making spring skiing possible well into the season. Björnen opens on 18 December and closes on 19 April and is especially suitable for families traveling during winter holidays and Easter. Duved and Tegefjäll open on 18 December and close on 12 April, offering great winter weeks but a shorter spring period. Dates may be affected by weather and operations, so checking updates before your trip is always wise.

Differences between the areas

The differences between the areas affect how long you can actually ski during the season. Björnen is close to many accommodations and has slopes for children, so for a late season trip, Åre Village or the high alpine zone is a better choice. Duved and Tegefjäll offer a calmer pace and wide pistes during the winter, but for spring skiing the village and the high mountains are more suitable. Åre Village has the longest operating time and acts as the hub when April turns into May.
The high alpine zone opens later in the winter but often offers the best conditions at the end of the season thanks to its elevation and location above the tree line. Choosing a week depends on your priorities, families often pick February and March, while sunshine and longer days attract many in April and early May.

Planning your days on the mountain

On any given day, the question of how long you can ski comes down to lift opening hours. The times vary between areas and throughout the season, so the most up to date information is in the SkiStar app and on signs at the lifts. An early start gives more runs before the slopes soften as the sun warms them. Breaks during the day make a big difference for comfort and safety, especially for children.
Wind and snowfall particularly affect the high alpine zone, where weather can cause temporary closures, so having a plan that includes the lower slopes in the village is smart when the forecast changes. Spring weeks with sunshine often provide longer and more pleasant days, while deep winter offers shorter daylight but colder, drier snow.
