How long is the season in Åre?
By Olof Kernell • November 27, 2025
The ski season in Åre is one of the longest in Scandinavia and usually runs from mid December to early May. Different areas close at different times, but for those who want to make the most of winter, it is often possible to ski well into spring. Thanks to its combination of an early start and a late finish, Åre attracts skiers for almost five months every year.
When the season starts
In Åre village, the first lifts usually open around Lucia in mid December, sometimes earlier if snow conditions allow. Ski Test Weekend often marks the start, followed by a period where more slopes open gradually. Björnen, Duved and Tegefjäll begin operating from 18 December, while the high alpine zone on Åreskutan does not open until February, once the snowpack is more stable at higher elevations.
December is therefore seen as a build up month, where the system expands step by step. Christmas and New Year attract many visitors, bringing a lively atmosphere early in the season.

The peak season months
January to March are considered peak season. January often brings crisp snow and quieter slopes after the holidays. February and March see more people in the ski system, especially during the school holiday weeks when demand is highest. During these months, almost the entire system is open, making it possible to ski from the top of Åreskutan all the way down to the village.
This period also offers night skiing, competitions, and a wide range of activities off the slopes. With abundant snowfall and longer days, many consider this the most reliable time of year for skiing in Åre.

Season ending in April and May
April is regarded by many as the highlight of the spring skiing season. Sunny days, long breaks in sun pits, and events like Red Bull Homerun create a special atmosphere. Easter often falls in April and fills the village with families and groups looking to celebrate. The lifts in Duved and Tegefjäll close on 12 April, Björnen on 19 April, while Åre village and the high alpine zone remain open until 3 May.
The season traditionally ends with Åre Sessions, a combination of music festival and skiing that attracts both visitors and artists. The weather in April can be unpredictable, offering anything from brilliant sunshine to sudden snowstorms, making good clothing choices extra important.
Those who enjoy contrasts can experience hard morning snow followed by soft, sorbet like conditions in the afternoon. The extended season sets Åre apart from many other ski resorts in Sweden, making it possible to ski for nearly half the year.
