When is the best time to visit Åre?
The question of when it is best to visit Åre has no single right answer. The resort is open year round and each season has its own character. For those who want top class skiing, there are several good options during winter and spring.
For others, summer with cycling, hiking and swimming is just as appealing. Autumn offers vibrant colours, calmness and events. The best time depends on what you are looking for – lively weeks with lots of people, a more affordable trip with a relaxed atmosphere, or green adventures in the mountains.

Winter for skiing and speed

December marks the start of the winter season. Åre fills with Christmas spirit, fresh snow and many visitors celebrating both Christmas and New Year in the village. January is a calmer month, with cold, sparkling snow and a quieter atmosphere after the holidays. For those who want to avoid queues and enjoy quieter slopes, January is a good choice.
February is considered the most intense skiing month. The entire system is usually open, the snow is abundant and the school holiday weeks create a lively atmosphere. March brings longer days, stable weather and often fantastic snow conditions. For many, March is the perfect balance between winter snow and spring sunshine.

Spring with sun and softer snow

April is a favourite month for many who want to combine skiing with a spring feel. The sun is warmer, the days are longer and the snow changes throughout the day. In the morning the slopes are firm and crisp, while the afternoons offer softer spring snow.
Prices also tend to drop compared with the busy school holiday weeks. Easter celebrations, events and sunny après-ski create a unique atmosphere. Even in early May, it is often possible to ski in Åre village and in the high altitude zone, while the valley begins to turn green. This contrast is appreciated by both training groups and tourists.

Summer and autumn for variety

When the snow melts, the summer season begins. June brings the start of the bike season and Midsummer celebrations. July is peak season for hiking, cycling, rafting and swimming in Lake Åre. August continues with warm days but a slightly calmer pace than July. For those who want to experience the mountains without skis, these months are the best time to visit.
Autumn offers beautiful colours and tranquility. September attracts visitors with the autumn market and colourful mountain hikes, while October is quieter and suits those who want peace and quiet. November marks the transition between autumn and winter, sometimes with an early ski opening but also the chance to experience Åre in a calmer phase.
