Cross country skiing in Åre attracts many visitors throughout winter and spring thanks to reliable snow and beautiful surroundings. The closing dates for the trails vary each year, as they depend on snow conditions and weather.
In general, Åre’s cross country trails are open from December to April, but some areas may close earlier in spring. All trail status is updated continuously by SkiStar, and when the snow melts, the trails are marked as closed in their system.

Trails in Björnen and Duved
The most popular areas for cross country skiing are the Cross country arena in Björnen and the trails in Duved. Björnen offers six different tracks, ranging from short 1 km loops to longer 15 km trails. The tracks run through forest terrain that holds snow well, but due to the lower elevation they usually close earlier than higher areas.
In a normal season, the tracks are open from mid December to mid or late April. Duved has five trails between 2.5 km and 15 km. The terrain is slightly hillier than in Björnen and attracts those who want more variation. The trails here close around the same time as in Björnen, often in mid april. Both Björnen and Duved have illuminated tracks until 22:00, making it easy to ski even on dark winter evenings as long as the trails are open.

Trails in Ullådalen and Åre village
Ullådalen is located higher up, around 800 meters above sea level, giving it a longer season than Björnen and Duved. Here you’ll find shorter loops of 2.5 and 5 km as well as connections to longer routes. Because of the elevation, snow can remain well into May, especially during colder springs.
Ullådalen is therefore a popular choice for those who want to extend the season after the lower trails have closed. In Åre village, there are also a few shorter cross country trails, including those on Lake Åresjön when the ice is safe. These trails are more weather sensitive and often close earlier, sometimes as early as March when the spring sun gains strength.

Keep track of trail status
Since closing dates vary from year to year, it is always best to check current conditions in the SkiStar app or on their website. All cross country trails are updated daily with information on whether they are open, newly groomed or closed.
In general, Björnen and Duved stay open until mid or late April, Ullådalen often even longer, while village trails close the earliest. For anyone planning a trip to Åre, it is therefore possible to enjoy cross country skiing for almost the entire winter season, sometimes all the way into May.
