Short-term rentals in Mariatorget, Stockholm

Mariatorget, on the western side of Södermalm, is one of Stockholm’s most charming neighbourhoods for those who want to stay in a lively part of the city while still being close to parks, historic streets and some of the city’s best views. At the heart of the area is the leafy Mariatorget square, surrounded by turn-of-the-century buildings, cafés, restaurants, bars and small local shops. The atmosphere is a little more classic Söder than SoFo, while still offering plenty of popular places to eat, drink and spend an evening.

The area works just as well for a weekend as it does for a longer stay. You can start the day with coffee by the square, wander through the historic streets of Mariaberget and finish with dinner and a glass of wine at one of the neighbourhood restaurants around Swedenborgsgatan or Sankt Paulsgatan.

Around Mariatorget and along Swedenborgsgatan, Sankt Paulsgatan and Hornsgatan, you’ll find a good mix of restaurants, bars, cafés and independent shops. There is everything from Spanish tapas and Neapolitan pizza to Italian restaurants and classic Swedish cafés. During the warmer months, parts of Swedenborgsgatan become especially lively as outdoor seating fills the street.

Hotel Rival sits directly on the square and is very much part of the neighbourhood, with its Tavernan restaurant and Watson’s Bar. Ramblas is a popular choice for tapas, while Meno Male is a good stop for Neapolitan pizza. For a more traditional Swedish coffee break, Chic Konditori is a classic local pastry shop right by the square, serving buns, cakes, sandwiches and light lunches.

If you enjoy vintage and second-hand shopping, the streets around Mariatorget and Hornsgatan are also worth exploring. The area forms part of Stockholm’s Slow Fashion District, with a large number of second-hand, vintage and independent shops within walking distance of one another.

One of the things that makes Mariatorget special is its proximity to Mariaberget. From the square, it’s just a short walk uphill through the historic streets around Maria Magdalena Church and towards Monteliusvägen. The atmosphere changes quickly here, with narrow streets, older buildings and quieter residential corners just a few minutes from the busy restaurants and cafés.

Monteliusvägen is one of Stockholm’s most scenic walks, with views across Riddarfjärden towards Gamla Stan, City Hall and Kungsholmen. It’s particularly beautiful around sunset, but worth the walk at any time of day. Ivar Los Park is another nice spot to stop for a while and enjoy the views.

Mariatorget itself almost functions as the neighbourhood’s living room. During the summer, the park fills with people meeting friends, having coffee or simply sitting in the shade, while the restaurants and bars around the square bring more life to the area as the evening goes on.

Mariatorget has its own metro station on Stockholm’s red line, just a short walk from the square, making it easy to reach central Stockholm and other parts of the city. At the same time, the neighbourhood is very walkable, with Mariaberget and the waterfront nearby, and Hornsgatan, Slussen and the rest of Södermalm easily reached on foot.

Its central yet relaxed setting makes Mariatorget a great base for both shorter stays and longer visits. You get the local feel of a genuine Södermalm neighbourhood, while still having much of Stockholm within easy walking distance.
