How many people live in Åre?
By Olof Kernell • November 24, 2025
Åre is known for its lively atmosphere, especially during the ski season. In this blog post, we take a closer look at Åre’s population. We explore how many people live here, how the population varies throughout the year, and a bit more about the locals.

"Åre’s population is a mix of year-round residents, seasonal workers, and temporary visitors, all of whom contribute to the village’s unique character."

Population statistics
In December 2023, 1,447 people lived in Åre’s urban area, an increase compared with previous years. In 2019, the urban area had 1,370 residents, meaning the population grew by 77 people over four years. The term “Åre urban area” refers here to the central part of Åre, including the surroundings of Åre Square, Åre Station, and Åre Strand, but not the nearby villages.
If we include Björnen, Duved, and Tegefjäll, the population becomes significantly higher. These three villages together have around 2,500 residents, giving a total population of nearly 4,000 people in Åre and the surrounding area.
Seasonal population variations
Åre’s population fluctuates quite a lot throughout the year. The winter season, from December to April, attracts large numbers of tourists who come for skiing, snowboarding, and the beautiful mountain environment. This makes the number of people in Åre increase dramatically. Summer is also popular, though not quite as busy as winter.
The number of people who live in Åre year round is relatively small, but there are many who stay for part of the year for example, those who work in tourism and hospitality.
Age distribution in Åre
The median age in Åre Municipality is 42.1 years. This is slightly higher than the national average of 41.3 years. Åre has a relatively even distribution across different age groups. The largest group is people aged 30–49. This may be because many in that age range move to Åre for jobs in tourism or because they enjoy the active lifestyle the area offers.
