When does the sun rise in Åre?
By Olof Kernell • November 28, 2025
The sunrise in Åre varies significantly throughout the year and influences both daily life and activities in the mountain village. During winter, the mornings stay dark for a long time, while summer offers almost endless daylight.
For anyone visiting Åre, the rhythm of the sun becomes an important part of the experience. The light determines when it's best to ski, head out for a mountain tour or simply sit with a cup of coffee overlooking the valley. The shift between seasons is striking and makes each period unique in its own way.

Winter’s late dawn
In December, the days are at their shortest and the sun does not rise until around 09:00–09:30. January continues in the same way, with late mornings and early evenings. This makes the ski days feel compact, but also atmospheric. The sky is often painted in soft shades of pink and orange as the light reflects off the snow, and many describe Åre’s winter light as magical.
In February, dawn begins to arrive earlier, and by mid-month the sunrise is around 08:00. By the end of February, it approaches 07:30, creating longer days on the mountain. For skiers, this is a big advantage as it provides more time during the lift hours and allows for both early-morning runs and late afternoons in daylight.

Spring’s rapid change
When March arrives, sunrise occurs around 06:30. The difference from winter is already noticeable, but it’s in April that the change becomes most dramatic. Early April sees the sun rise around 06:00, but by the end of the month dawn has moved forward to about 04:30.
In just a few weeks, Åre shifts from regular early mornings to extremely long days that almost never end. This period is loved by many because you can start your activities early.
Skiers get firm pistes in the morning and soft spring snow in the afternoon, while hikers and cross-country skiers can enjoy long days out on the mountain. The light makes the spring season in Åre unique compared with many ski resorts further south.

Summer’s early mornings
In June and July, the days are at their longest. The sun rises as early as 02:30–03:00, and it never becomes fully dark. Twilight blends directly into dawn, creating the feeling that the day never ends. Many take advantage of these early mornings for hiking, cycling or peaceful moments on the mountain while the rest of the village still sleeps.
The bright nights are also one of the reasons why summer attracts so many visitors. During August, the days start to shorten again, with sunrise around 04:30 at the beginning of the month and roughly 05:30 in September. By October, sunrise is not until after 07:00, making the arrival of autumn very noticeable.
