Åre’s location

Åre is located in western Jämtland, about 100 km west of Östersund and 50 km east of the Norwegian border. More precisely, Åre sits at 63.40° N latitude and 13.07° E longitude. The village is situated at the foot of Åreskutan, Sweden’s southernmost mountain that exceeds 1,400 meters.
This impressive peak is a symbol of Åre and offers fantastic views of the surrounding landscape. Åre is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery with lakes, rivers, and forested slopes. Lake Åresjön, which lies right next to the village, is a popular place for swimming and water sports in summer.

For those in a hurry or traveling from far away, flying is the fastest option. Åre Östersund Airport is located about 90 km from Åre. The total travel time from Stockholm including check-in, flight time, and the transfer from Östersund to Åre is around 4 hours.

Åre is located farther north than Sälen and Idre, which means longer days during winter and better chances of seeing the northern lights.
